At the beginning of each year, many of us sit down to make a few New Year''s Resolutions. Frequently, these are related to our jobs, our finances or our careers, with many people seeking to make changes to the way they feel about their employment.

If you are anxious to improve your job satisfaction in the year 2010, begin first by considering what it is that the term job satisfaction really means to you? Read on for a few useful starting points in making these considerations.

First of all, do you like to be constantly challenged or do you prefer to work in an environment where you already feel secure of your capabilities? This is often something that changes with age, so don''t fall back on your automated response of 15 years ago.

There are people who find ample satisfaction in simply making enough money to fund the kind of lifestyle they have chosen for themselves, and require little else incentive besides. Others, however, find it harder to be motivated by financial gains alone, and require a goal or a cause about which they can feel truly passionate, as is often the case within professions such as teaching, social work or public sector jobs.

There are businesses and organisations who function through a strong team network, making everyone feel valued and integral to the whole. Is this something you find stimulating? Other companies might use challenges and competitions that reward the individual to inspire their employees to strive harder. Would you respond more productively to this kind of workplace?

If you are not currently 100% satisfied with your job, it might be the right time to start thinking about which of these factors you would most like to change. Once you''ve established the main problems, finding a suitable solution ought not to be so difficult.

It could simply be a case of talking to your boss and seeing what possibilities are available to you within your current workplace. Depending on the status of your job and what kind of working relationship you have, it could be that small changes will be made in order to improve the way that you feel about your work. Or perhaps there are alternative openings available within your company or organisation that may be more suited to your abilities and requirements.

If your answers to the questions above serve only to indicate that you need a new direction altogether, then begin by doing your research carefully. Check out the guardian jobs website for a range of possibilities and then do some ground work looking into the job satisfaction rates of those that appeal to you. Even if you never make that big move, you owe it to yourself to be armed with sufficient information about the possible alternatives.
